From 2.5D to 5‑axis Drilling
Macro Technology: Drilling plate
Did you know that the feature and macro technology of hyperMILL® enables you to program in record time? In this video, all holes are recognized and programmed with just a few clicks.
Drilling with hyperMILL® CAM software
Comprehensive strategies and functions enable highly efficient programming in conjunction with feature and macro technologies. Each hole is reliably recognized as a feature. NC programming may be carried out manually or automatically.
Whatever the type of drilling task, hyperMILL® always offers the right cycle. This begins with simple tasks such as centering or drilling with chip breaks and it ends with complex deep hole drilling with various stepped and cross-holes.
Features and macros make NC programming easier.
The advanced feature macro technology provided by hyperMILL® CAM software makes the complex drilling of hundreds of holes on multiple orientations easier for the user. NC programming becomes simple and extremely convenient as holes can be recognized reliably at all times.
All hole types are listed clearly. These can then be programmed reliably and quickly, either manually or with the support of machining macros. The programming of drill holes can also be fully automated.

Innovative drilling module
The task: To remove as much material as possible from a circular pocket in an efficient and tool-friendly manner.
The solution: 5‑axis helical drilling using our innovative drilling module.
The 5‑axis drilling function allows drilling with different tool
angles to be automatically programmed simply and quickly in a single operation. An automated function calculates the tool position. The lead-in pointing to the holes are linked together. The tool paths are optimized and checked for collisions. If collisions are detected, the cycle automatically positions the tool on a collision-free plane.
Benefits
- Harmonic and constant toolpaths
- Shorter positioning times
The helical drilling cycle, patented by OPEN MIND, permits tilt milling with a toric tool in a helix. Machining takes place with an endmill or bullnose cutter in a 5‑axis simultaneous movement and always at the tool tip. The 5‑axis milling tool position reduces the load on the machine spindle. The milling tool always has an optimized contact point on the material and retains a minimal cutting force. 5‑axis helical drilling is also suitable for milling tools that are not center cutting. This strategy is excellent for making an opening cut when roughing deep cavities. Chips are removed safely from the cavity.
Benefits
- Pre-drilling is no longer necessary
- Tool plunges into the material quickly and efficiently
- Particularly tool-friendly machining
Complex deep hole drilling with various stepped and cross-holes can be programmed reliably using hyperMILL® CAM software. The feedrates, spindle RPMs and coolant can be controlled separately for different areas and elements such as guide bushings, pilot holes or cross-holes. Here, the strategy automatically detects cross-holes on the basis of the specified stock. This helps to prevent tool breakages.
Benefits
- Simple and reliable programming
- Regional feedrate adjustment
